Up against the pressures of time, fear, and self-doubt, Anna must prove that her life is worth living... in the face of death herself. She has five minutes to address her vulnerabilities. She has five minutes to realize her identity. She has five minutes to make a decision - so which will it be?
In tackling this complex piece, I wanted to convey how a human’s beautiful individuality can so easily dissipate - and grow to, instead, manifest itself in a negative light. When a person loses touch with their sense of identity, their reason for being... they become a somber vessel. By placing focus on the details of an otherwise broad subject, I discovered the importance I place on valuing one’s worth. To communicate this message in the most heartfelt manner, I took on a subject personal to me. I explored how the outside world’s expectations can crush an artist’s spirit. As a result, the artist forgets their initial passion… becoming a hollow product of others’ deprecation.
Hourglass evokes feelings of fear, frustration, understanding, sorrow, melancholy, happiness, and perplexity. In the end, though, you’ll pose the question - could YOU save yourself in five minutes?
